Another piece of protective gear is a simple hat...but best, one with a brim that covers the neck and ears, such as the Tilly style, bush hats or even a hood.   The sun is one reason but the other is those wayword casts, with a hook or split shot coming at the back of your head as fast as a bb fired from a pellet gun...you know it's got to hurt.  Trust me on that one.

Polluted water is a realitiy, especially on our home waters, the Thames River.   One important thing to keep in mind is to learn NOT to cut your line with your teeth or moisten you line in your mouth before snugging a knot.  It's a very bad habit that will end up costing you a lot of grief and a lot of time on the porcelian thrown, or worse.    I learned this the hard way.  Trust me!  You don't want to.
